Today we visited Flat Rock Brook in Englewood, NJ for our last day of filming for Season 1 of Eric En Plein Air! I learned so much about this nature preserve from Executive Director, Stephen Wiessner and Rosetta Arrigo (Land Steward / Raptor Care Specialist). Their raptor sanctuary is home to birds of prey who wouldn't be able to survive in the wild. I was particularly charmed by Tilly, an Eastern Screech Owl who was saved after being attacked by a cat. Unfortunately, Tilly lost sight in one eye, but she has a very nice home there where she is safe and protected. I also had a great conversation with James Falletti, a photographer & educator who travels and takes beautiful nature photos. James shared his inspirations and some great tips for photographing nature. For this episode's art lesson: I shared more information about color theory while using oil paints to capture a scene next to the brook. It was very serene to hear the moving water while painting this scene. What a thrill it was today to visit Lyndhurst in Tarrytown, NY. This episode explores the past and present state of this Gothic revival mansion. Our wonderful guests included Assistant Director, Krystyn Hastings Silver and Horticulturalist, Eugena Pilek Swart. Thank you to everyone at Lyndhurst for welcoming us and we can't wait to come visit again for a future episode!
Moving inside, we toured the downstairs, which is decorated for fall/halloween and then visited the stunning art gallery where my art history teaching experience came alive!My painting lesson for this episode showed oil painting techniques. Another artistic and educational episode of Eric En Plein Air as we visited Reeves-Reed Arboretum. I learned a lot and I can't wait to come back in the spring to paint their beautiful daffodils! Learning so much from these amazing guests! Watercolor lesson in the amphitheater! Goats are "on loan" from a local farm to eat extra vegetation now that the season is over. The second photo is a reconstruction of a bald eagle nest! I had no idea the nests were so large, but I held a bald eagle when I was in Ireland and they are definitely big birds! I love animals and this episode was really fun as I learned more about this wonderful organization. Artistically, I shared a lesson for sketching animals with charcoal.
